Colorado Travel Trailer Insurance Laws

People turn to recreational vehicles for different reasons. Some purchase motorized motor homes while others prefer trailers they can pull with another vehicle. Some use their RV for recreational purposes while others purchase behemoths, sell their home and decide to live permanently on the road. Still other recreational users rent Rvs for occasional outings. In all instances, Colorado requires minimum liability insurance, whether the RV is rented or purchased. Additional insurance may be a wise investment, depending on the planned use of the RV.

    Colorado Bare Minimum Insurance Requirements

    • The minimum amount of liability insurance required by Colorado law is $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury; and $15,000 per accident for property damage. No comprehensive insurance is required.

    Med-Pay is Optionally Mandatory

    • Colorado requires insurance companies providing RV insurance to also offer "Med-Pay" insurance, as well. Since the state repealed no-fault insurance laws in 2004, which required you to purchase medical insurance to cover accident-related injuries, insurance companies must offer $5,000 of medical payment insurance. RV motorists may decline to carry this insurance, but if you don't have health insurance, it's an option you may want to consider.

    CATPA

    • The Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) requires insurers to pay a $1 assessment for every automobile it insures by July 1 each year. The insurer has the option of passing this nominal cost along to the consumer in Colorado.

    Rental RV Insurance

    • All licensed and registered vehicles on the road in Colorado must be insured even if you are renting the RV. Your personal insurance provider will likely write a binder for rental units (a fee charged over and above insurance for vehicles you own) on a temporary basis and usually at a nominal fee. If you are unable to obtain insurance for the rental RV from your insurance carrier, most RV rental businesses offer the option.
