What is the "Donut Hole"?
The "Donut Hole" in the new health care program is for part D Medicare. It is a one time rebate for Medicare of $250 for Medicare. It is to help you pay for prescription drugs. This means that after you and your plan have spent a certain amount of money for covered drugs, you have to pay for costs out-of-pocket for your drugs. This is known as the "Donut Hole" in drug coverage, it is money to help cover the gap in prescription drugs. It is only for Medicare patients. Medications bought outside the USA are not covered under this program. Beneficiaries remain in the Donut Hole until their out of pocket costs exceed $4550.
In 2011, if you have high prescription drug costs that put you in the donut hole, you'll get a 50% discount on drugs while you're in the donut hole. Between 2010 and 2020, you'll get Medicare coverage for your drugs. When you leave the donut hole the Medicare Part D beneficiary will pay $2.50 per month for generics and $6.30 per month for name brand medications. This will be a great savings for senior citizens. With Medicare Part D Plans, the coverage gap starts when the cost of the medications reaches $2840 and continues until the cost of the medication reaches $6447. You can then calculate when you go into the coverage gap by working with your expenses. It will be a big savings for seniors to only pay $2.50 for generic drugs or $6.30 for name brand medicines.
