How to Wire Domestic Lighting

    • 1). Remove all of the existing cords and parts from the old lamp. This includes removing the shade harp. You want to make sure that none of the original wiring is left intact. Cut off the cord at the base of the lamp with the wire cutters and remove the socket from the top of the lamp using a screwdriver and pliers.

    • 2). Pull the original cord out of the lamp. You should be left with a hollow lamp base with no light socket. If you are using a new object to transform into a lamp, drill a hole in the object to allowed the cord to pass from top to bottom.

    • 3). Thread the cord from the base of the lamp out through the top. You should see the plug end of the cord trailing out from the bottom of the lamp.

    • 4). Using the nipple supplied in the wiring kit, thread it in to the top of the lamp. If you are using a found object, you will need to thread the nipple into the top of the object and run the cord through.

    • 5). Screw the new bulb socket on top of the nipple.

    • 6). Tie an underwriter's knot in the top end lamp cord. Separate the two wires by gently pulling them apart giving you about three inches of separated wire. Tie the knot with these two ends.

    • 7). Strip approximately one inch of the ends of the wire with the wire cutters.

    • 8). Attach one of each of the loose wires to the two terminals on the bottom of the bulb socket.

    • 9). Screw in a new bulb in the lamp socket, replace the shade harp, replace the shade, and plug in the lamp to make sure that everything is in working order.
