How to Convert a CBR F3 Front End
- 1). Stabilize the motorcycle on a repair stand or with wood blocks or a metal crate under the lower frame tubes.
- 2). Identify and remove the windshield fairing bolts at each side and the front of the motorcycle with a metric socket and ratchet. Ease the fairing forward to clear the headlight and set the fairing aside.
- 3). Loosen and remove the bolts that secure the disc brake calipers to the mounts at the left and right forks with the socket and ratchet. Stabilize each caliper by inserting a 6-inch metric bolt into the upper bolt port on a caliper and into the upper mount on the corresponding fork.
- 4). Loosen and remove the front axle nuts at each end of the forks with a metric socket and ratchet. Ease the front wheel forward so the attached disc rotors on each side clear the calipers. Take the front wheel off and set it aside.
- 5). Support the lower ends of the forks with a floor jack and wood blocks to prevent the forks from dropping out of the fork tubes during the conversion.
- 6). Loosen and remove the fork bolts at the top of each fork tube with an adjustable wrench. Save the bolts. Remove the seat stopper, O-ring and spring seat from the inside of each tube by hand. Discard these parts.
- 7). Raise the floor jack in increments to compress the forks as you remove the spring collars and the stock fork springs from each fork tube with needle-nose pliers. Discard the stock spring collars and the stock fork springs. Do not lower the floor jack at this point.
- 1). Coat the inside of each fork tube with a modest amount of lightweight oil. Insert a new fork spring from the kit into each fork tube by hand. Insert a new spring collar into each tube.
- 2). Lower the floor jack until the top edges of the collars are approximately 1/2-inch below the tops of each fork tube. Put a new spring seat atop each collar. Install the new O-rings into the recesses inside the fork tubes by hand.
- 3). Insert a new spring stopper into each fork tube. If necessary, lower the floor jack enough so the spring stoppers are flush with the tops of each fork tube. Thread the saved fork nuts into the tops of each fork by hand. Tighten the nuts with the adjustable wrench.
- 4). Lower the floor jack. Repeat the preparation steps in reverse and reassemble the front-end components, starting with the front wheel and attached disc rotors. Remove the temporary 6-inch bolts from each caliper and secure each caliper to the forks with the factory bolts. Reattach the windshield fairing with the factory bolts.
- 5). Ride the motorcycle and test the action and response of the front end. If necessary, follow the procedures in the CBR F3 service manual and adjust the tension of the forks to suit your riding style.
