Close up Photography with your Female Art Nude

Close Up Photography is an interesting area within portrait photography and one well worth pursuing. The Close Up is a creative approach to framing your female art nude photographs and can result in powerful and sensual images. Also what you chose to show… or not to show, can bring a very different perspective to your subject that can catch the viewer's eye.

With the close up you are only photographing a section of the model's face or body and therefore you can put the model at ease with this anonymous view point. How close you actually get to your naked model depends more on your own camera's capabilities than the artistic results. So be familiar with your camera and its close up facilities, and get to know the true value of the ‘depth of field' in your effort to tell a fresh story. To the beginner, the depth of field is the area of reasonable sharpness within the photo. And by using a limited depth of field in the close up mode, you'll able to emphasise a precise area, for example, a lock of hair, whilst everything else in the photo becomes blurred.

Concentrating on an individual area of the body can yield interesting images. And by experimenting with depth of field and soft focus, these effects can accentuate the subject's appearance.

Producing close ups can help the photographer to:
  • create a sensual female art nude bodyscape image
  • removes distracting backgrounds
  • ideas can be developed away from the studio environment where any room or location can be used, provided you have the light levels working for you and your proposed photos
  • there will be less post-shoot editing to remove unnecessary clutter etc. Note, it's better to frame your close up rather than crop a much larger image later, as the latter it will suffer from resolution and sharpness problems
  • the model remains anonymous (if required), and the image produced may seem timeless and universal.

Personally I find bodyscapes (a section of the body treated as a landscape) very interesting, such as how the light can play over the curvature of a woman's body. The light plays a critical part in these images, as it moulds the body and contributes to the sense of mystery. And if the light is filtered through say either a patterned curtain, a roller blind or an interesting piece of material, it can produce very interesting patterns on the skin. For a bodyscape to work, you will need to position the model (or the lights) where the light falls best, be it natural or flash light. Also consider using fill in flash to lessen the darker shadows (if required).

To produce successful close up female art nudes you don't necessarily need a studio, and for them to work well, it's best to plan in advance. If you are using props, then you must consider how best to use them to create great female art nudes. If you need inspiration, then look at some of the Masters of Photography such as Bill Brandt, Ergy Landau, and Nora Dumas.

Close ups are an exciting form of female art nudes. Some images can make the photo appear totally unreal. And it's worth noting that they don't need to be explicit to achieve interesting, sensual and arresting images that can stand the test of time.
