Tips for Decorating a Kid's Room

    • Make your child's room special.cute kid image by Mat Hayward from Fotolia.com

Creating a special space for your child is a lot of fun and a chance to use your creative skills. When planning the decor for a kid's room, take into account his age and interests. If you are decorating a nursery, you will likely plan something different than when you are designing a room for an older child. Also, if possible, consider decor that will grow with your child, or that you can easily transform as he gets older.

    Theme

    • Decorate your kid's room around a specific theme, such as the zoo. This, of course, includes zoo animals. You can either go very bold with all of the design, or use dark woods, neutral textiles and pops of color throughout the room. For a more neutral room, paint the walls in a sophisticated, two-tone striped look. Use colors such as yellow and cream for the stripes. Choose dark, cherry wood for the bed, dresser and side tables. Add touches of both black and red throughout the room. Black shelves and lamps, as well as red framed pictures, tie the look together. Place a large rug on the floor with pictures of animals on it, such as tigers and zebras. Place a rocking chair in a neutral cream color in a corner of the room. Add a throw pillow with giraffes on it. Red window treatments with images of monkeys on them, along with stuffed animal monkeys and giraffes throughout the room, round out this look.

    Nook

    • If you don't have a designated area for a playroom, consider transforming a corner of his bedroom into a play area and reading nook. Section off an area using a room divider or even curtains. Add tables, bookshelves and a cozy bean bag chair. Make sure that there is adequate lighting by adding overhead lighting. Create the feeling of a special room by hanging up a few photographs in the nook. Another idea is to create a mini art studio. To do so, set up an easel, storage for paint supplies, including shelves and drawers, as well as a standing floor lamp. Keep special clothes to wear during art play in this area as well.

    Personalize

    • Add a personal touch to your kid's room by monogramming their name throughout the room. This will make her feel special, while also helping young kids learn how to spell their name. Purchase small, child-size chairs for the bedroom. Have her name or initials monogrammed on it. Another idea is to first draw and then paint her name on the wall. If you aren't able to paint, consider using removable wall decals to do so. You can add initials and first names on other items, such as picture frames and even fabric-lined baskets used for storage.
