A mid-range member of Honda's XR family of off-road motorcycles, the XR250 was a popular trail bike for decades. The XR250 is uncomplicated and reliable, making it an ideal bike for entry-level off-road riders. The XR250R is the trail version of the 250cc bike, while the XR250L is a street-legal variant. Both the XR250R and XR250L were discontinued after the 2004 model year, when they were replaced by the CRF250X. - The 2004 XR250R features a 249-cubic-centimeter dry-sump four-stroke engine with air cooling, single overhead cam, and a single cylinder with four valves. The engine's bore is 73 millimeters, with a stroke of 59.5 millimeters. Its compression ratio is 10.2:1. Fuel is delivered via a 30-millimeter piston-valve carburetor. The bike's power train consists of a six-speed manual transmission and an O-ring-sealed chain drive.
- The XR250R's front suspension features a 41-millimeter leading-axle Kayaba cartridge fork with adjustable compression damping and 10.6 inches of travel. The rear suspension utilizes a Pro-Link Kayaba single shock absorber with spring preload, adjustable compression damping and adjustable rebound damping. The rear shock also allows 10.6 inches of travel.
Stopping power is provided by single-disc brakes on the front and rear; the front brake features a two-piston caliper. - The XR250R has a wheelbase of 55.1 inches, a seat height of 36 inches and ground clearance of 12.4 inches. The bike's dry weight is 240 pounds, and its fuel capacity is 2.4 gallons.
