Literary book bags consist of books and activities to encourage reading in an exciting way. Many teachers allow students to take home these literary bags overnight. Whether students take the bags home or complete the assignment in the classroom, a few books and supplies are all that you will need to make different types of book bags. Incorporating interesting books and exciting activities in the bags is educational and entertaining. - Create a bag of books about numbers and money for the students to read. Put a zipper bag with fake money and coins in the bag. The children can read the books and count the fake money when they finish the books. Make 2 to 3 bags of money and have the student count the total amount in each bag. Have the student write the total for each bag on a small piece of paper and put it in the bag. If the student correctly counts the money in each bag, he will earn an extra prize. Extra prizes, such as pencils, stickers and markers are perfect for students. Other ideas for a numbers bag include number flash cards and coloring pages with numbers.
- Fill the book bag with a couple of books about fairy tales. Put a couple of pieces of paper and a pencil in the bag. After the student reads the fairy tales, have her try to write her own fairy tale. Tell her to write a one-page story about a fairy tale of her choice or use her imagination to create her own. She can also use markers to draw pictures of the characters in her story on a separate piece of paper for extra credit.
- Many students find animals intriguing and they love to read about the different types of animals. Make a literary book bag with three or four books about animals. The student will read each of the books and select his favorite animal. Have him write on a sheet of paper all the reasons this is his favorite animal and read them aloud to the class. Another idea for an animal book bag is to include index cards with several different animals on the cards. The student can use the cards to play a game of animal charades with his family or with the other students from the class.
