Immigration Check Point Requirements

    Documents

    • In order to pass through United States immigration checkpoints, you need to provide the necessary documents to prove your citizenship or your right to visit the country. U.S. citizens need to present a passport, a driver's license or a Trusted Traveler Card that proves certification with a program such as a NEXUS, Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI), or Fast Full-Service Relocation (FAST). Children under the age of 16 can also present an original copy of their birth certificates. Visitors need to show Form I-94 or I-94W and provide the address of where they will be staying. These forms need to be filled out prior to entering the country. If you are traveling near the border of the United States, it's a good idea to have these documents on hand at all times.

    Declared Items

    • If you pass through an immigration checkpoint, you will need to already have all items that you bought across the border declared. Pack the items you declared separate from other items and keep your sales slips and documents readily available. This will include receipts for jewelry, perfume, food, alcohol, medications, pets and any item you did not have last time you crossed the border. The guards at these checkpoints can search your car randomly if they so choose, to check for undeclared items, illegal drugs, restricted animal and plant commodities, and more. You will also want to have your car registration information available.

    Prohibited Items

    • When passing through a checkpoint, know what items are prohibited so that you are not caught with them. Firearms and ammunition are prohibited, as are fruits and meats from Mexico, Cuban cigars, switchblade knives, and endangered species. Illegal drugs are always prohibited, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited unless you can prove that you are 21 years of age or over.
