Subliminal messages are brief flashes of words, images or sounds, that are designed to be picked up by the subconscious mind. Disney included subliminal messages in almost every single Disney movie; some say they are harmless pranks by Disney artists, while others believe they promote sexual promiscuity. Many of these messages are adult in nature, and inappropriate for young children, hence some of the new DVD re-releases have edited out the scenes containing the subliminal messages. - The Lion King has numerous subliminal messages and sexual references throughout the movie. One of the most famous is when the character Scar lies on a cliff, the word "sex" is spelled out in dust cloud. Disney claims it in fact spelled SFX, an acronym for "special effects," however, it caused so much controversy that it was edited out of all home editions of the movie in 2003. Another subliminal message example is a phallus shaped object carved into the rocks that can be seen for several frames.
- In the scene when Bianca and Bernard are traveling on the back of Wilbur, an image of a topless woman can be seen the window behind them. Disney recalled the movie, and removed the inappropriate scene.
- An example of audible subliminal messages is when Aladdin climbs onto Jasmine's balcony and mumbles "take off your clothes." There is some debate as to whether this is exactly what he says, while Disney denies it.
- There is a subliminal message on the front cover of the movie, where what appears to be a phallus is hidden as part of the golden castle. Rumor has it a disgruntled artist hid this image to seek revenge, while Disney denies this claim.
- When Jessica Rabbit jumps out of a taxi, for a brief moment that lasts for only two frames, she can be seen without underwear -- clearly an inappropriate image for children. A humorous prank in the original movie was a poster that for only two frames, flashed the Disney chief executive Michael Eisner's telephone number. This was edited out in all the home movie versions.
- In one scene, a figure of a girl appears in the fire, then for a split second, the girl can be seen completely naked. There are also several incidents when the fire spells out the word "sex," although Disney denies this. Pause the scene frame by frame to make your up your own mind.
