How to Decorate a Banjo Head

    • 1). Decide on your design. Determine whether you will paint the head a solid color or use a more unique pattern or image. Your individual artistic talent will be a large determining factor for this.

    • 2). Remove the strings of the banjo. Twist the keys at the end of the banjo neck to loosen the strings. When they are loose enough, unwind them from the string pegs. Pull each string through its individual hole on the banjo head to remove it.

    • 3). Clean the banjo head. Use any all-purpose spray cleaner that is good for plastic. Most kitchen cleaners will suffice. Spray the cleaner onto the head and wipe any excess dirt or grime away with a clean cloth.

    • 4). Mask off the areas that you wish to protect from paint. This includes the stainless steel mounting ring around the edge of the banjo head.

    • 5). Draw your design or image onto the banjo head with a pencil. This creates a guideline for you to paint the image with. If you are doing a solid color instead, skip this step.

    • 6). Paint the banjo head. Choose the proper brush sizes depending on your design. Use smaller brushes for detailed work and edge trimming, and larger brushes for big areas or single color designs. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 7). Apply a coat of clear varnish to the banjo head with a brush. This clear layer protects your artwork from wear. If the layer of varnish begins to wear over time, reapply as needed.
