- The festival is held each July at the University of California's Berkeley campus. The venue is an outdoor amphitheatre known as the Hearst Greek Theatre, which looks out over San Francisco Bay.
- The festival was founded in 1966, initially was run by students from UC Berkeley. More recently, Bay Area Productions and Another Planet Entertainment took over the organization and promotion of the festival.
- Notable artists who have played at Berkeley Jazz Festival in the past include Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Kenny G, Sheila E, John McLaughlin, Chaka Khan, Airto Moreira, Harry Belafonte, Ike and Tina Turner and Herbie Hancock.
