Purpose of Corn Head Row Unit Plate

    Cutting

    • The cutting action of a corn head row unit has a lot to do with the preservation and presentation of your harvest. When shipping a crop out, you need uniformity in presenting your crop. The cutting feature helps size cornstalks evenly during a harvest. The machine quickly strips the bottom stalks, but leaves the remaining stalks with the ears of corn intact. Cutting the crop in this way also helps prevent moisture and residue from getting trapped in exposed corn ears.

    Feeding

    • Feeding is a very important feature on a corn head row unit. Once you cut the crop, you must feed it through the unit plate and collected into the feeder house. Don't crush the crop or let it get wrapped during the feeding process. A large cross auger aids the feeding feature by slowly grabbing the corn up and pushing it through a funnel so the corn can be collected in the feeder house without coming back out through the auger. This helps reduce feeding time and speeds the process of cutting a crop.

    Hydraulic deck plates

    • The hydraulic deck plates on a corn row plate allow operators to easily adjust the range of row spacing when moving from different crops. By adjusting the deck plates, an operator can set the plate according to a specific crop conditions, no matter whether the stalks are high or low . As a result, the hydraulic deck plates help to reduce premature shelling, trash intake and ear loss.

    Ear-saver shields

    • The ear-saver shields, also known as ear gates, are behind the feeders on a corn head row unit. Ear-saver shields help to stop ears of corn from falling out of each row unit and getting left behind or crushed in the field. The ear-saver shield is an essential in waste reduction; it helps prevent stalk wrapping and also helps preserve ears of corn.
