Top Spots to Drink in Grenoble

When you are flying into Grenoble, France, to spend a few days in the Rhne-Alpes region at the foot of the French Alps, you must know that you are heading to the €capital of the Alps', where the history, international research and sport all combine to create a fabulous holiday destination.

Grenoble airport transfers can whisk you to your hotel direct from many UK cities, making it a quick and easy getaway. The presence of numerous American and British companies means it is it home to the largest English-speaking populace in France, outside of Paris. Once you arrive, there are plenty of tourist attractions to visit, including one of Europe's most important museums, the Museum of Grenoble, and in the evenings there are plenty of places to go and whet your palate with your drink of choice. Here are just a few.

Barberousse €" 3 rue Bayard. Part of a chain of identically named bars that dot the landscape of France, Barberousse is a great place to head for a celebratory arrival drink after your Grenoble airport transfers drop you off. This bar is the place to go for rum, many varieties of which are hanging, fermenting in giant flasks above the bar. Think €shooters' and €planters' when you enter this pirate's den; tipples include their specialty drinks and shots based on oranges, coconuts, apricots, and bananas, among others.

O'Callaghan's Irish Pub €" 2 place Berulle. If a taste of Ireland abroad is more your thing, then heading to O'Callaghan's Irish Pub straight from your Grenoble airport transfers will put you into familiar territory. O'Callaghan's Irish Pub is a truly authentic pub where you can tuck yourself away and enjoy a Guinness or Kilkenny beer while watching the rugby or international football with other English speaking sanctuary seekers. And, with its friendly family vibe and large terrace, you even have an excuse to take the rest of the family back for a pub lunch the next afternoon.

Caves de la Chartreuse €" If you are looking for something a bit more unusual and historic, head over to the Caves de la Chartreuse. Located in the nearby city of Voiron, about 25 kilometres from Grenoble, the Chartreuse Order of cloistered monks (the Carthusians) are now best known for their €Elixir of Long Life' - or Elixir Vegetal de la Grande-Chartreuse. This liqueur is made of plants and herbs suspended in 69% alcohol, by volume. While your Grenoble airport transfers may not pass by here, it's not hard to find yourself. Pop over to the monastery and tour the cellar, which claims to be the largest liqueur cellar in the world, and enjoy the drink, knowing that your purchase goes to help fund the good works of the monastery itself.
