How to Macrame a Beaded Bracelet

  • 1). Measure and cut two strands of hemp cord. Make one cord twice as long as the other. For a child's bracelet, cut a 60-inch and a 30-inch strand. For an adult's wrist, cut a 100-inch and a 50-inch strand. You can always shorten the string if need be while braiding.

  • 2). Fold both pieces of hemp cord in half, so there is an even amount of cord on each side. Hold each cord at its midpoint and tie the two cords together to make one big knot. Leave a small loop, about 1 inch long, above the knot.

  • 3). Tape the extra cord above the knot to a flat surface. This will make it easier to work on the bracelet. Separate the four cords by placing the two longer cords on the outside and the two shorter cords in the middle.

  • 4). Grab the outside left cord, cross it over the two middle cords so you've created half of a triangle, and then tuck it under the right outer cord.

  • 5). Grab the outer right cord and tuck it under the two middle cords. Bring it up through the middle of the half-triangle. Pull the longer outer cords tightly to create a knot.

  • 6). String a bead onto the middle two cords; both cords should go through the center hole of the bead. Push the bead all the way to the base of the knot. Don't leave any gaps between the knot and the bead.

  • 7). Tie another knot, but this time, start by crossing the right cord over the two middle cords -- creating another half-triangle -- and then string it underneath the outer left cord.

  • 8). Bring the outside left cord underneath the middle two cords and up through the half-triangle. Pull both ends tightly to tie another knot.

  • 9). Add another bead by slipping it onto the middle two cords. Push the bead all the way to the base of the knot.

Repeat Steps 4 through 9 by tying a knot, adding a bead, and then tying another knot on the alternate side. Keep adding beads and tying knots until you have about 1 inch of cord left. The longer cords will eventually get shorter and match the length of the shorter cords as you continue to tie knots.

Stick the end of each cord through one hole in a four-hole button. Tie a double knot at the end of each cord to keep the button in place. Cut off any additional cording, and then tie the bracelet onto your wrist.
