Novel Ideas for Book Clubs
- Book clubs with a Jane Austen theme, in addition to being common, are easy to find books for: "Mansfield Park," "Emma," "Pride and Prejudice," "Sense and Sensibility," "Northanger Abbey," and "Persuasion". In order to have more than six sessions, try Austen-related books like "The Jane Austen Book Club" and "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman."
- Mystery-themed book clubs have two options: following one detective over a series of adventures, or hitting many different series. Examples are the Miss Marple series, the Sherlock Holmes series or the Poirot series.
- Stephen King is a great source of horror fiction, as is H. P. Lovecraft. (Refer to Resources below.)
- Novels by Alice Walker, Jeanette Winterson, Toni Morrison and Margaret Atwood--all award-winners--are good choices for contemporary women's literature.
- Choose a novel from a Nobel Prize winner and go back through the years. You can find a list in the Resources section.
- Children's literature can accommodate both an adult's and a children's book club. Try such classics as "A Secret Garden," "The Phantom Tollbooth," "Little Women," "The Princess and the Goblin" and "Bridge to Terabithia." Look also at award-winners; refer to the Resources section for a link to a database.
