How Should I Groom My Pom-Maltese?
- 1). Brush shorter coats once a week and longer coats every other day. Brushing removes dirt, dead hair and pollen from the coat and skin as well as keeps the coat tangle and mat free.
- 2). Remove tangles and mats using a slicker brush for coats that resemble that of the Pomeranian breed. Brush against the grain on the soft, wooly undercoat and with the grain on the course outer coat. Blow-dry and brush in an upward direction.
- 3). Brush with and against the grain using a wire pin brush for coats that resemble the Maltese. Use a slicker brush to remove tangles and mats. Blow-dry and brush in a downward motion in the direction of the coat grain.
- 4). Bathe your Pom-Maltese using pet-safe shampoos when the coat becomes soiled or develops a doggy odor. Some owners opt to bath their dogs once every 10 days.
- 5). Use moisture-replenishing, pet-safe shampoos and conditioners. Human salon products cause dryness and irritation. Perfumed pet-shampoos can over-dry skin or cause an allergic reaction.
- 1). Wash the dog's eyes using a warm, moist washcloth to remove dust and pollens that cause tearing as often as necessary.
- 2). Clean the ears during extended grooming sessions with pet-safe, non-medicated ear washes, and trim your Pom-Maltese’s nails, including the dew claws, after bathing when the nails are soft with pet-safe nail trimmers.
- 3). Wipe off your dog's teeth weekly with a pet-safe toothpaste to rid the mouth of odor-causing bacteria.
