How Fast Does My Internet Speed Need To Be For Online Backup?

We configure online back up solutions all of the time for our dental practice clients.
We feel that triple redundancy is never too much for your valuable patient information.
If one of our dental practices were to lose their patient information it would be absolutely devastating to their practice.
The backup solution that we recommend to our clients is a pretty simple and straightforward solution containing a 1TB external hard drive that always stays on site, 2 1TB portable external hard drives that get rotated on an every other day schedule, and an online backup solution just in case something happens to the physical hard drives.
When configuring an online backup for a client today I came to realize just how important it is to inform our dentists about the importance of the internet speeds in their office and how it can effect your online backups.
Your average cable Internet line is going to run at around 1MB/s if you're lucky.
This would equate to 1GB of patient information taking approximately 10 HOURS to upload to your online backup.
The smallest patient database that I have come across has been about 40GB, and that was in an office that just started using digital imaging.
With digital imaging their database will easily grow to 200GB+ very quickly.
You're best best would be to contact your Internet service provider and inquire about getting an upgrade in your upload speeds or consider getting a dedicated T1 line.
T1 lines are generally guaranteed 99.
9% up time so there would never be and variation in your upload/download speeds.
Our clients online backups do well with a 1.
5Mbps - 3Mbps upload speed.
