Information About Type 2 Diabetes in Children

    Features

    • In type 2 diabetes, the body becomes insulin resistant. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas and carries glucose (sugar) to the cells for energy.

    Effects

    • When cells become insulin resistant, sugar builds up in the blood. Left untreated, it can lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, liver damage, nerve damage and skin infections.

    Causes

    • The cause of type 2 diabetes in children is unknown, but there appears to be a direct link to unhealthy weight, eating habits and inactivity.

    Symptoms

    • According to The Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of type 2 diabetes in children are weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, sores that won't heal and areas of darkened skin. Increased thirst, hunger and urination are additional symptoms.

    Treatment

    • Type 2 diabetes in children can be treated and possibly prevented by diet and exercise. Other methods of treatment may include medication, such as insulin, and closely monitoring blood sugar levels.
