How to Sew a Crinoline

    • 1). Measure yourself around your hips. Measure yourself from your waist to your hips. Cut two rectangles of the lining fabric. The length of the fabric should be half of length of your hip measurement plus 3 inches. The height should equal the measurement from your waist to hip plus 1 inch.

    • 2). Position one of the rectangles on top of the other, with right sides facing each other. Sew the side seams together on the sewing machine with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 3). Fold the top of the slip under 1/2-inch, wrong sides facing each other. Sew the fold down, close to the bottom edge, leaving a 1/2-inch opening at the back of the slip.

    • 4). Cut a piece of elastic the length of your waist measurement plus 1 inch. Pin a safety pin to the end of the elastic. Insert it through the opening in the back of the skirt, and slide it through the top of the slip. Overlap the ends of the elastic 1/2 inch, and sew together. Sew the opening in the slip closed.

    • 5). Cut two strips of netting 11-inches wide by twice your hip measurement long. Gather the two layers of netting together using a gathering foot on your sewing machine.

    • 6). Sew the gathered strips to the bottom of the slip, with right sides facing each other, at a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 7). Cut another two strips of netting 11-inches wide by three times your hip measurement long. Gather the two strips separately.

    • 8). Sew one gathered strip to each of the two layers of net already sewn on the slip, right sides facing each other, with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
