How to Replace the String on a Troy-Bilt TB590BC

    • 1). Hold the outer spool located on the end of the trimmer shaft with one hand and loosen the bump knob by turning it clockwise with the other hand. The bump knob is reverse threaded. Place the bump knob off to the side for now.

    • 2). Pull the inner real out of the outer spool assembly. Be careful, as the underside of the spinner spool has a spring pressed into it, which could fall off. If it does, set it off to the side and remember to reinstall if before you place the loaded inner spool back into the outer spool assembly.

    • 3). Clean the inside of the outer spool assembly with a rag to remove grass buildup. Clean the inner spool, if needed

    • 4). Loop an 18-foot length of 0.105-inch line into equal 9-foot lengths.

    • 5). Slide each end of the string through the two holes. Pull the string so the loop is small as possible.

    • 6). Wind the string in the direction of the arrow on the inner spool. Create tight, even windings around the spool. Stop when you have approximately 12 inches left unwound.

    • 7). Hook each end of the string onto the tabs on the edge of the inner spool. This holds the strings in place.

    • 8). Place the ends of the strings through the holes located on the side of the outer spool. At the same time, slide the inner spool into the outer spool. Pull on the strings to pull them out of the tabs.

    • 9). Secure the spool into place with the bump button. Remember, it will tighten in a counterclockwise motion.
