The Difference between Taper, Pillar, Jar, Votive and Tealight Candles

Here are some helpful types on selecting the right type of candle for your situation as well as how-to tips for beautifully burning candles:

Taper Candles
Taper candles are most commonly used at dinner tables for ambiance and around the house for decoration. Taper candles are long and slender and long, usually 6€ to 18€ in length, and need to be held securely upright in a taper holder. If the taper candle is loose in the holder, beeswax fitter strips can be used to secure the candle. If the candle is too large for the holder, dip the base of the taper in hot water to soften the wax to fit the candle into the holder without chipping. Any taper candle will drip if the flame is disturbed enough, so be sure to keep burning taper candles out of drafts and ask for drip-less tapers. Taper candles are best extinguished with a snuffer.

Pillar Candles
Pillar candles are solid in shape and can be unscented or scented. They are the ideal selection for home d©cor due to the wide variety of colors, shapes and textures. The first time you burn a pillar candle, let the candle burn long enough so that the liquid wax reaches to within € to the edge of the candle. This will ensure that the candle will burn evenly and completely without tunneling.

Jar Candles
Candles in a container are the ideal choice if you are buying a candle for fragrance purposes. Since fragrance is liquid, a candle in a container can hold far more fragrance than a pillar or taper candle. Scented candles can be poured in glass, ceramic or tin containers. To burn a jar candle without tunneling, allow the wax to melt completely across the top of the candle the first time you burn it. Never pour melted wax out of a jar candle as that is what creates the fragrance. Be sure to trim the wick to € every time before you light a candle. A nice, tight, steady flame will burn cleanly without soot or smoke. Be sure to use a wick-dipper to extinguish a candle in a container without any smoke so you don't lose the beautiful fragrance.

Votive Candles
Votive candles are approximately 1€ wide by 2€ high. They are typically used to scatter fragrance around a room or for ambiance. Votive candles are most commonly purchased without a container but some are poured in glass jars. Votives are made to melt when they burn so they need to be used in a votive holder for proper burn.

Tealights
Tealights are the smallest candle and are primarily used to scatter light around a room for ambiance and also to illuminate candle holders specifically designed for tealights. Tealights are made in a metal or plastic container. Inexpensive tealights last 2-3 hours while quality tealights burn for 6-8 hours to last through an entire party.
