How to Make a Terrarium Out of Household Stuff
- 1). Remove any paper labels or glue from the glass jar, especially if you're using a food jar. Clean the jar using soap and water and dry completely or let dry overnight. Then paint the lid in one of your favorite colors if you want to cover any logos, pictures or designs on the lid.
- 2). Pour a layer of small rocks or pebbles into the jar, using just enough to coat the bottom completely. Then pour a layer of charcoal on top of the rocks. The charcoal filters out smells from the plants and objects in the terrarium and the rocks keep your other items from sinking to the bottom of the jar.
- 3). Tear moss into smaller pieces and add those pieces into the jar. The moss has a bright green color and makes it look like you have many different types of plants inside the terrarium. Add other types of small plants into the terrarium, including ferns and ivy.
- 4). Add other types of decoration to the terrarium, including things you have around the house. Look for small toys or even the decorations from your last birthday cake. Use small objects that won't cover the surface of the plants, but still add some color.
- 5). Water the terrarium by pouring a small amount of water directly inside the glass jar. You should see some water drip down to the rocks and even some drops on the inside of the jar. Water the terrarium at least once every two weeks to keep the plants looking healthy. Give it some time to breathe when you water it by removing the lid for an hour.
