First you need to consider the surrounding area where you plan to build your coop, depending upon where you live you may need a more portable structure.
However, if you live in the country or have enough acreage then a more permanent building may be perfect for your needs.
As for the actual size of the building itself you need to take into consideration the number of chickens that you want to raise.
Most often breeders estimate around 4 square feet of room is needed for each bird so you should adjust your plans accordingly.
Make sure that you include the basic needs of the chickens as well.
In order for them to grow healthy and produce good eggs they need an ample amount of space as well as conveniently located food and water areas.
You will also need to include perches and nesting boxes.
You need the perches as if they do not have them they will use their nesting boxes or food areas for that and their droppings may cause contamination or illness.
Also, keep in mind that they need plenty of sun for warmth so if need be you should install some type of lighting in the coop as well.
This is especially important if you want good eggs all year long.
