Customs regulations in Iceland

Customs regulations in Iceland are controlled by the Iceland Directorate of Customs. To make sure your arrival in Iceland goes smoothly, here are the current customs regulations in Iceland:

Typical travel items like clothes, cameras, and similar personal goods normal for the purpose of your visit can be taken through customs in Iceland duty free, without having to be declared (= green customs line upon arrival in Iceland).

Going through the green customs line is for travelers without anything to declare, but customs does random checks. Gifts can be taken to/from Iceland up to a value of ISK 10,000.

- How much money can I bring? Iceland customs allows travelers to bring as much currency as they would like. There are no restrictions.

- Can I bring tobacco to Iceland? Yes, you can if you’re 18 or older. The allowable limit per adult is 200 cigarettes or 250 grams loose tobacco.

- Can I take alcoholic beverages to Iceland? Customs restricts the import of alcohol to Iceland by allowing adults of 20 years or older to bring 1 liter spirits + 1 liter wine or 1 liter spirits/wine + 6 liter beer or 2,25 liters wine into Iceland duty-free. (Categorizes spirits as beverages with at least 22% alcohol, wines with less than 22% alcohol).

- What are the Icelandic customs rules for medicines? Iceland allows travelers to bring personal prescription medicines (up to a 100 day supply) without a customs declaration. A formal doctor’s note may be requested by Icelandic customs officials.

- What is restricted by Icelandic customs regulations? Don’t bring illegal drugs, prescription medicines not for personal use or in large quantities, weapons and ammunition, telephones (except mobile cell phones), plants, customized radioing and remote control items, fireworks, exotic animals, fishing gear, riding gear (includes clothing & gloves!), snuff tobacco, and most foods.

- How can I bring my pet to Iceland? If you want to bring your pet to Iceland, familiarize yourself with the import requirements imposed by the Icelandic Food & Veterinary Authority. Iceland heavily restricts the import of any animals and requires several medical treatments as well as animal quarantine upon arrival. There is a pet entrance application form you'll need to fill out. If you bring your pet without permission, it may be denied entry or euthanized. Only bring your pet if you absolutely have to, following the official guidelines for bringing dogs and cats to Iceland.
