Where to Find Old Car Body Parts
- 1). Know the details about the car and the part you are seeking. Have the year, make and model handy when you are looking for specific body parts. Be aware of any options packages your vehicle may have. For example, a door panel for a Boss Mustang will fit differently than that of a Cobra Mustang. These details can mean the difference between a body part that fits, and a body part that does not.
- 2). Check the phone book for salvage yard listings. Many salvage yards advertise primarily in the phone book. Once you have found several in your area, call them. Ask if they have any cars that match yours, and ask if the body is salvageable. You can also ask them what the fees and procedures are for purchasing and removing body parts. Most salvage dealers are very knowledgeable about what they have in their yards, you can save yourself time by calling ahead.
- 3). Review and post ads to online and newspaper classifieds. Post a clearly worded ad indicating exactly what you are looking for. Chances are you will at least find another car enthusiast who can point you to other resources, but you could also find exactly what you are looking for. When you are pursuing this avenue, don't forget that you have the option of bargaining for the part you are seeking.
- 4). Contact and/or join a car club. Many clubs have listings of recommended mechanics and other important resources for the ownership of older vehicles. By involving yourself with this type of organization, you can open up a number of resources.
