Engine

• In 2004, Toyota offered three engine options for the Camry. All of these engines consisted of an aluminum block and aluminum heads. Toyota outfitted all of them with dual overhead cams, and all three used a multiport fuel injection system. Each engine had four valves per cylinder. The base, LE and XLE models featured a 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder engine. This engine produced 157 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 162 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. The LE V-6 and the XLE V-6 drew power from a 3.0-liter powerplant that generated 210 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 220 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. Toyota equipped the 2004 SE V-6 with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine. It cranked out 225 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 240 foot-pounds of torque at 3,600 rpm.
  
  

Transmission

• Toyota offered a choice of three standard transmissions in the 2004 Camry. The company equipped the base, SE and LE with a five-speed manual transmission, with an optional four-speed automatic as an upgrade. The XLE only used this four-speed automatic. Every V-6 configuration featured a five-speed automatic as standard, with no upgrades available. All models employed front-wheel drive.
  
  

Fuel Economy

• A 2004 Camry powered by the 2.4-liter engine earned 23 to 24 mpg in the city and 32 to 33 mpg on the highway, with the lower number being achieved through use of the four-speed automatic transmission. The LE and XLE V-6 models were rated at 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, while the SE V-6 earned 20 mpg during city driving and 29 mpg when driven on the highway. Toyota installed an 18.5-gallon tank in all models.
  
  

Performance

• According to the "Cars.com" website, the Camry SE using the four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 8.27 seconds (9.56 seconds with the automatic) and had a quarter-mile time of 16.6 seconds at a speed of 84.91 mph. An XLE V-6 sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.84 seconds and crossed the quarter-mile in 15.24 seconds at 91.93 mph. The SE V-6, with its 3.3-liter engine, raced from 0 to 60 mph in 6.62 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 15.24 seconds at 91.93 mph.
  
  

Safety

• Toyota installed front passenger and driver's side airbags in all 2004 Camry models. An XLE and XLE V-6 also included front side and rear curtain airbags, which Toyota otherwise offered as an upgrade. The XLE trim and all V-6 models featured four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, which Toyota sold as an upgrade to the front disc, rear drum brakes on the four-cylinder models.
  
  

Dimensions

• Toyota built all models of the 2004 Camry on the same platform. This platform gave all trim levels a 189.2-inch length, a 107.1-inch wheelbase and a 70.7-inch overall width. The base and LE models stood 57.9 inches in height while the SE and XLE had a 58.3-inch height. All models sat five people. The XLE and SE models took size 215/60R16 tires while the LE and base models rode on size 205/65R15 tires.
  
  

Features and Options

• Standard features on all trim levels included a 60/40 fold down rear seat, power windows, cruise control and a rear defroster. The LE trim featured power mirrors, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, power doors, power front seats and a 6-speaker AM/FM stereo with in-dash single CD player. Upgrades to the LE included an 8-speaker CD changer stereo system, power moon roof, larger tires and leather-coated steering wheel. An XLE included all of the LE standard features plus chrome interior trim, an 8-speaker CD changer stereo and a security system. The XLE upgrades consisted of heated leather seats, power moon roof and aluminum alloy wheels. A Camry SE offered performance tires, speed-sensitive power steering, a chrome grille and exhaust, body moldings and halogen headlights and front fog lights. Options on the SE included leather heated seats, aluminum alloy wheels, power moon roof and a navigation system.
