Autoimmune Thyroid Problems

    Hyperthyroidism

    • Overproduction of the thyroid hormone results in hyperthyroidism. This thyroid problem increases metabolism and causes weight loss, fatigue, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, chest pain and muscle weakness.

    Graves' Disease

    • Graves' disease is the most common type of hyperthyroidism. It is the only form of thyroid problem which causes bulging eyes, swelling of eye tissue and inflammation of the eyes. Graves' disease is a genetic condition.

    Hypothyroidism

    • Underproduction of the thyroid hormone results in hypothyroidism. This thyroid problem slows metabolism and causes weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, weakness, muscle cramps, constipation, memory loss and irritability.

    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

    • Hashimoto's is the most common hypothyroidism problem. It is more common in women than men. Some people with Hashimoto's thyroiditis have persistent pain.

    Treatment

    • People with hypothyroidism are treated with thyroid hormone replacement. People with hyperthyroidism are treated with antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine or surgery.
