Recently, the famous Four Roses (formerly Ancient Age) distillery in Kentucky released their 2010 Limited Edition Small Batch bourbon. Four Roses is the only distillery to combine five proprietary yeast strains with two separate and unique mashbills. This allows the distillery to make 10 distinct whiskies. This particular bourbon is three recipes allowed to age for various periods (10,11 and 15 years) and hand blended by Master Distiller Jim Rutledge.
The result is a complex, yet approachable bourbon.
Nose
On the nose, warm caramel and vanilla flavors predominate. Soft oak notes, and a honeysuckle-like sweetness linger in the glass as well. For being bottled at barrel strength, this bourbon has a surprisingly soft and approachable bouquet.
Body and Palate
Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2010 is medium bodied with an almost creamy mouthfeel. On the palate, light oak notes are in balance with spice notes of allspice and cinnamon with a hint of clove smoke and ground ginger. Summer fruit tones of Montmorency cherry, apricot and even raspberry are blended with a honeyed smoothness that results in a rich and complex bourbon.
Finish
One of the most enjoyable things about Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2010 is its subtle but satisfying finish. This bourbon glides off the palate, presenting apricot, oak, and clotted cream notes before disappating. This is a bourbon that leaves you wanting for more, and sip after sip, Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2010 does not disappoint.
With only 3,600 bottles of this bourbon being released, it may be hard to track down this edition of Four Roses. Rest assured, any efforts to locate this whiskey will be greatly rewarded once you taste the rich and complex flavor of Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2010.
