DIY Wake Up Light
- 1). Determine what time you want to wake up in the morning. Since light is a gentle and quiet way to wake up in the morning, you will have to experiment with your own body rhythm to see how long it takes you to respond to the light. Plan to give yourself an hour the first day and don't stop using your alarm clock immediately.
- 2). Set your programmable timer to turn on at the time you determined and then to turn off after you think it will be light enough outside. You can find these timers in home improvement stores or at online stores. Make sure you have set the time to a.m. and not p.m. or it will not turn on your lamp in the morning.
- 3). Plug your timer into an outlet and then plug your lamp into the timer. Make sure the outlet is not turned off at a wall switch or use an outlet that is constantly on to make sure you have power in the morning. Many timers have batteries to keep settings in case there is a temporary power loss during the night.
- 4). Adjust the time you want your lamp to come on as your body gets used to waking with light---a more natural wake-up than an alarm clock. You can experiment on non-critical days and turn off your alarm clock to see how you wake up with just the light. Over time, your body should adjust to the rhythm of the light turning on in the morning.
