How to Install an Alternator on a 2001 Toyota Corolla

    Removal

    • 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    • 2). Remove the alternator connector and wiring by disconnecting the plastic connector by hand.

    • 3). Loosen the two alternator bolts connecting the alternator to the alternator bracket.

    • 4). Remove the alternator belt by sliding it over the alternator pulley after the alternator bolts are loose.

    • 5). Remove the two alternator bolts and remove the alternator.

    Replacement

    • 1). Place the alternator in place between the brackets.

    • 2). Slip the drive belt over the alternator pulley. Install the two alternator bolts using 14 mm and 17 mm wrenches. Torque the 14 mm bolt to 18 foot-pounds and the 17 mm bolt to 40 foot-pounds. This will also tighten the drive belt.

    • 3). Reconnect the alternator connector and wiring by plugging it in. The wiring will make an audible click sound when properly in place.

    • 4). Reconnect the negative battery cable.
