Herbicide for Killing Weeds in Lawns

    Identification

    • Three categories of weeds affect lawn turf: broadleaf, grasses and sedges. Target herbicides affect only the target plant group. For example, broadleaf herbicides work only on broadleaf plants, not grasses or sedges.

    Broadleaf Weed Control

    • The post-emergent herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is an effective hormone inhibitor for broadleaf plants. Applied to broadleaf plants and weeds, 2,4-D causes uncoordinated growth and plant death. Check 2,4-D-based herbicide labels for toxicity on specific lawn grass types before application.

    Effectiveness

    • The systemic post-emergent herbicide 2,4-D, is effective for controlling annual and perennial broadleaf weeds. It works by mimicking the naturally occurring auxin, Indole-3 acetic acid, causing irregular growth and death. 2,4-D is very effective at controlling established perennial weeds in lawns without harming turf.
