- 1). Choose either square or round sturdy boxes or Styrofoam shapes to form the base of your cake. Wipe any dust off of the boxes.
- 2). Add a few drops of water to a tub of spackle and stir. The water will thin the spackle so that it will spread easily on the cake base.
- 3). Use a plastic spatula to spread a layer of spackle over the cake base. Immediately smooth the spackle with a metal spatula to create a smooth and sheer finish. Allow the cake to dry for three hours or as directed by the spackle instructions.
- 4). Add 1/2 cup of spackle to a medium-sized pastry or icing bag. Add a few drops of water to the bag if the spackle requires thinning. Place a large-sized application tip at the end of the bag and begin decorating. With spackle you can create edges and borders on the outer ends of the cake, as well as flowers and other decorative touches.
