How to Change an Alternator for a 1996 Tahoe

    • 1). Open the Tahoe's hood manually. Remove the Tahoe's negative battery cable end from the negative battery post using the battery wrench.

    • 2). Pull the Tahoe's serpentine belt tensioner off the serpentine belt with the serpentine belt tool. Lift the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley with your free hand. Slowly move the tensioner back into place with the tool.

    • 3). Remove the Tahoe's main engine harness from the back of the alternator by hand. Unbolt the electrical ground wire from the back of the alternator with the socket set.

    • 4). Extract the twin alternator mounting bolts from the Tahoe's alternator bracket using the socket set. Remove the old alternator from the bracket and replace it with the new one by hand.

    • 5). Bolt the Tahoe's new alternator to the bracket with the socket set. Bolt the electrical ground wire to the new alternator with the socket set. Plug the main engine harness into the new alternator by hand.

    • 6). Reinstall the Tahoe's serpentine belt and negative battery cable in reverse of how you removed them. Close the Tahoe's hood.
