The MPG on the 1996 Ford Bronco

    Miles Per Gallon

    • All Broncos were four-wheel-drive, so mpg only varies by the engine and transmission package. Broncos equipped with the 5.0-liter V-8 and five-speed manual were rated at 13 city and 16 highway mpg; the convenience of having a four-speed automatic cost Bronco owners two mpg in the city. The 5.8-liter (automatic only) Bronco was rated at 11 mpg in the city and 15 on the highway.

    Comparisons

    • The Bronco compares well with the same-year offerings from Chevrolet and Dodge; Chevy's 4WD Suburban rated 11 city and 16 highway, and the 4WD Ram 1500 came in at one mpg lower than the Bronco for comparable engine and transmission packages. However, the Bronco's replacement Explorer and the larger Expedition probably offer the best basis for comparison. The 5.0-liter 4WD Explorer rated 13 city and 17 highway mpg, and the 5.4-liter Expedition ponied up a (relatively) respectable 11 city and 15 highway.
