Fall/Winter Makeup: Hot Trends for 2014 With Looks You Can Try at Home

Top Makeup Looks for Fall and Winter

Some of the makeup looks on the fall and winter fashion runways were clean, flawless skin and neutral makeup, with subtly flushed or bare cheeks, bleached out or natural eyebrows, metallics on the eyes, nails and lips.

I loved the beautiful jewel toned eye makeup at the Anna Sui Fall/Winter show (above) during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.   In fact, there was a lot of green metallic eye shadow and lips to be seen.

Lips ranged from natural to rich burgundies and reds.  Touches of burgundy and crimson shades were not only on the lips, but also on the eyes.  There were creative takes on lined eyes, colorful eyeliner, thick wings and smoky eyes.

Also noticeable, multi-purposing product – lipstick used as eye shadow, blush palettes used for contouring and eye shadow, eye shadow used as lipstick.

The above makeup look was done by Pat McGrath using CoverGirl TruBlend Liquid Makeup Foundation and CoverGirl/Olay De-Puffer Under Eye Concealer.  Eyes were done in either emerald green or sapphire blue and the lips were done with CoverGirl Queen Collection Lipstick in Fine Wine and topped with CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Hot.

Crimson Eye Shadow

Several years ago I heard snickers on the subway train when I wore crimson-colored eye shadow.  I’m still scarred from the experience (I'm joking), but reddish and reddish-brown shadow was seen at a number of fall shows.

Someone was ahead of her time.

The above look at the BCBGMAXAZRIA F/W Collection featured a deep reddish shadow sans eyeliner and mascara, bare skin and soft pink lips.

Metallic Green Lipstick

Metallic green lipstick was the signature makeup look for the Korto Momolu Fall 2014 fashion show.

Celebrity makeup artist Jackie Gomez used makeup from SheaMoisture’s new cosmetics line to reflect the combination of “elegance and edginess” of Korto Momolu’s military-inspired “Urban Coup” Fall 2014 collection.

To get the look:

Step 1:   Gomez began by applying SheaMoisture Sheer Foundation ($14.99) all over the face “for an even and flawless finish.”

Step 2:   Next SheaMoisture Wet/Dry Powder ($14.99), one shade darker than the individual models’ skin tones, was applied across the forehead by the temples and underneath the cheekbones to create a contour effect.

Step 3:   This was followed with SheaMoisture Black Eye Liner ($8.99) to softly line the shape of the lips, filling them in lightly.

Step 4:   Last, SheaMoisture Wet/Dry Eye Shadow ($4.99) in Elsa, a vibrant emerald green shade, was applied with a clear gloss.

Minimal Makeup & Bold Brows

At 3.1 Phillip Lim AW '14 the focus was on a bold angled brow.  The look was created by Francelle Daly for NARS Cosmetics, with clean eyelids, just a touch of gel on the lashes and mascara for length.  The brows were groomed and filled with NARS Brow Perfector ($22) and Matte Eyeshadow ($25) in a shade to match the models' hair color. The face makeup was minimal using tinted moisturizer and the cheeks were slightly sculpted with blush.

Adorable Do: Great Brows & Lips

This was the adorable look at Carolina Herrara FW 2014.  The simple makeup look with well-groomed brows and pink lipstick went well with the fashions and the equally adorable updos.

Glitter and Gold

The look for the Naeem Khan Autumn/Winter 2014 fashion show was described as "effortless chic,"  and featured deep red lips, gilded eyes, defined brows and full lashes and luminous skin with a dewy texture.

To Get the Look:

Start with a moisturizer to soften and hydrate the skin (in this case Aqua Gel Luminous Oil-Free Moisturizer) followed with sheer color from a tinted moisturizer and set the makeup with loose powder.

For the eyes the gold lamè side of NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Kauai ($35) was used on the lids and followed with a lengthening mascara.  The lips were the best part of the look using NARS Velvet Lip Liner in Lanikai (burgundy) and Audacious Lipstick in Bette (Bordeaux).

Couture Chic

To complement the slicked back hair and "couture ponytail" hairstyle created for the models walking the runway of Reem Acra Fall/Winter 2014, makeup artist Pat McGrath created a very subtle makeup look.  Eyes were darkly lined along the waterline with CoverGirl Bombshell Intensity Liner. A brown wet-look satin finish shadow was swept onto the lids, while the face was left nude and the lips a shiny pink.

Sparkle and Shine

The makeup look at Pamella Roland Fall/Winter 2014 was also tasteful and sophisticated, with a bare face, sparkling eyelids and a bold lip, created by lead makeup artist Matin Maulawizada, Global Brand Ambassador for Laura Mercier

Face

To create a smooth canvas, Laura Mercier Foundation Primer  ($33) was applied to the face, followed with Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen ($43) to give the skin a dewy glow.

Concealer was used where needed and the cheeks were given a natural rosy flush with Laura Mercier Cheek Colour ($25).

Eyes

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Khaki was applied to the lids.  Then, using the fingertips,  a layer of silver glitter was applied, followed with another dab of the Caviar Stick Eye Color to slightly mattify the color.

Lips

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Merlot was used on the lips.

Metallic Eye Shadow

There was a lot of metallic touches to the Katya Leonovich Fall 2014 collection and the signature makeup look was a metallic silver shadow on the lids and beneath the lower lash line, and extended to the outer edges of the eyes like a stretched wing, with black liner drawn along the upper lash line.

Plum Lips

For Parkchoonmoo Fall 2014, there were clean, flawless matte faces, a contrast to an almost shellac-like sheen on the eyelids and the lips.  The look was created by Jenna Menard, Clinique Global Colour Artist.

Face

Clinique Even Better Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($27) one shade lighter than the natural skin tone, was applied and blended onto the face with a foundation brush and followed with Stay Matte Sheer Pressed Powder ($24) for a matte finish.

Almost Powder Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 was used to lightly contour the cheeks and provide definition just below the cheekbone using a tapered brush.

Eyes

Using the fingertips, All About Eyes ($31) cream/gel eye cream was applied on eyelids to give them a glossy shine.  Lashes and brows were kept natural.

Lips

Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick ($16) in Matte Plum was applied to the lips and then lined with Quickliner for Lips ($16) in Plummy which was blended into the lip color to give lips the deep plum color.  Then Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss ($16) in Currant was applied to the lower lip only, to make the lower lip look fuller and plumper.

Holographic Nails

The natural makeup look at Cushnie Et Ochs, was accompanied by darkly lined winged eyes with an extended delicate flick at the end.

To go along with the winged cat eye, it was appropriate to have long cat-like nails. The dark stiletto fingernails were imagined to resemble a holographic oil slick.
