How to Prune Branches on a Bonsai Ficus

    • 1). Prune the branches of the ficus bonsai in the spring.

    • 2). Cut all large, excess branches using a dull pruning tool until you achieve the shape you want. The ficus will start bleeding latex as you cut its branches.

    • 3). Dip a paper towel in the latex, and dab it on the wounds made by the cuts. The latex will seal the wounds.

    • 4). Cut the upper portions of smaller branches, and make sure you leave a small branch stub on the plant. Leave the stub to dry. The stub will take a few days to completely dry. You can remove the stub easily when it dries completely. It will leave a small scar on the plant.
