Tricks for Picture Posing

    Angle Your Body

    • Standing straight might seem like the normal thing to do when you're just walking around, but when it's picture time, it really doesn't do anything flattering for the ole bod. Take a hint from a gal such as Paris Hilton. When it's time for a picture, lean so your body is curved, with an arc in your back. With your shoulders back and hips curved inward slightly, you instantly lose pounds off your body, appearing taller and slimmer.

    Smile Naturally

    • So there might be times when a big, bare-it-all, cheesy grin is appropriate, but the general rule when posing for pictures is to keep it natural. You basically want to look like you're not posing at all. Smile right before the picture's taken, so your mouth doesn't get sore holding the same position, which ends up looking like a fake smile. Never smile too big, or it just won't look real.

    Make Eye Contact

    • For candid shots, sometimes you might be looking away from the lens, but when someone says "smile" it's not really time to try your hand at a romantic, far-off gaze. Instead, lower your chin, angle your head to one side slightly, and look directly into the camera. By the way, you're supposed to look at the lens, not the flash bulb, so you don't end up with that crazy looking-away-from-the-camera-without-knowing-it stare.

    Choose the Right Colors

    • When it comes to your makeup and clothing choices, choosing the wrong colors can mean the difference between a pretty picture and nightmare photograph you'd rather forget. Choose colors based on your skin tone, hair color, eye color, and of course, pick colors you shine in and that you enjoy wearing.

    Practice

    • Your mother always told you practice makes perfect, right? The same applies here. You can tell yourself the same picture posing rules over again, but until you get some practice time in -- put that vanity mirror at home to good use -- you'll never know how you're faring with your new-found posing tricks.
