    Sodium

    • Foods high in sodium cause high blood pressure, so people should avoid anything with more than 500 mg per serving.

    Processed Foods

    • Processed foods such as frozen meals, pot pies and canned soup should be avoided because they are high in fat and sodium. A single frozen dinner can contain as much as 35 g of fat and 930 mg of sodium, which is more than the recommended daily allowance.

    Fast Food

    • Many meals served at fast food restaurants are loaded with trans fats, cholesterol and sodium. One meal can contain the number of calories recommended for an entire day.

    Alcohol

    • People who are susceptible to high blood pressure should limit their alcohol intake to one or two drinks a day or eliminate it all together.

    Red Meat

    • Individuals should avoid red meat because these meats can contain toxins and chemicals digested by the animals before they are processed. Instead, stick to lean white meat or fatty fish.

    Caffeine

    • Caffeine found in coffee, tea, chocolate, and sodas cause spikes in blood pressure in people who are sensitive to this health condition.
