How to Install a Cat Door
- 1). Choose the right size pet door for your cat. Most cats will need a small or medium door. Choose a small door if your cat is thin. Choose a medium door for a fat cat. If you're not sure what size you need, use a tape measure to measure your cat from the top of his head to the floor. A small door is about 5 inches wide and 7 inches high. A medium door is in the range of 8 inches wide and 12 inches high.
- 2). Measure the height of your cat from the floor to the underside of his belly. Use this measurement to mark off the bottom line on the door in which you will install the cat door.
- 3). Tape the template, which will be included with your cat door, onto the door. Tape the template so that the bottom edge matches up to the measurement that you made on the door. Trace along the outside of the template to create an outline on the door.
- 4). Drill a 1/2-inch hole in the corners of the template.
- 5). Insert a jigsaw blade into the drill holes on the door. Saw along the edge of the template from hole to hole, until the piece of door can be removed.
- 6). Sand down any rough edges with a piece of sandpaper.
- 7). Place the cat flap into the hole with the lock facing the inside of the door. Use a pencil to mark the screw holes.
- 8). Remove the flap and drill into the marks, using a drill with a 3/16ths-inch bit.
- 9). Place the cat door back into place and tighten the screws. Tighten all of the bolts, and use a hacksaw to cut off any lengths of screws that stick out beyond the bolt.
