  Lukla, Nepal, is a small community of around 1,200 people. In the Kumbu region and sitting at 9,380 feet, it's the first place in the Himalayas used to access the Mount Everest base camp. Although Lukla means "place with many goats and sheep," the area has been transformed from grazing lands to hotels and lodges. Accessing the region requires a 1.5 hour flight from Kathmandu or a seven- to eight-day walk from Jiri. The town has some comfortable, reliable hotels with hot water heating, but because Lukla is very small and has only recently been developed, phone lines aren't commonplace---so most hotel bookings must be done through third-party websites.
  
  

Khangri Resort

• Located in Lukla beside the small airstrip that brings guests into the region, Khangri Resort is a 20-room hotel. All rooms include an attached bath, hot showers and individual heating units.
