Eat Smart to Increase the Effects of Your Workout

In an ideal world, you want to eat two to three hours before you workout. However, this is not always practical. You do want to make sure you eat, as you do not want to substitute your workout for eating. Your body needs both. Follow these tips for scheduling and you will see maximum benefits in both your workout and your weight loss.

Eating for the Early Bird Workout

Some people just love working out first thing in the morning. If this sound like you, eat something before you start. Your body needs fuel and your body used lots of the stored carbs from the sleeping all night long. If you do not eat something, then you are libel to feel weak and sluggish. Exercise should make you feel energized and good.

Hint: If you work out early in the morning try eating a bowl of cereal, low-fat yogurt, or fresh fruit.

Eating Smart for the Lunch-Hour and After-Work

If you want to workout at lunch, then split your lunch up. Eat half a few hours before you go do your workout. This will give you the needed energy for the workout. Then when you get back to work, eat the other half at your desk.

If you plan on working out after work, then plan a mini-meal in the afternoon. Somewhere around 3:00 or 3:30 is good. A bowl of cereal or whole grain bread with just a hint of peanut butter works well.

The Long and Hard Workouts

Whether you are doing a "Fun Run," charity bike ride or a mini-marathon, your body can only handle about an hour's worth of carb storage. This means that if you are going long and hard, you will need to refuel along the way. If you want to finish the race in one piece, you need to eat and drink. Sports drinks offer nutrition and hydration. You may want to consider a small energy bar as well.

Since long workouts are hard on the body, consider going natural. A small carb and moderate protein is ideal. You might even want to pack a fresh fruit for a sugar rush along with whole-wheat crackers or bread.

Keep these tips in mind when working out and you will see that weight loss is not as hard as it seems. Eating smart for your workout is only one small step in your overall weight loss goals. However, each step takes you one-step closer to meeting your goals. Good luck. I will see you on the other side.
