Why You Should Understand Depression Even If Don"t Have It

The reason is simple and that is because the number of people suffering depression is increasing and not declining.
This therefore greatly increases the chances that someone that you know, a friend or family member will have it.
The problem with managing depression, or trying to, is that often it goes undiagnosed.
People are reluctant to admit that they have a problem and if it is not physical they often will not go and get it checked out.
Depression still has a stigma attached to it and so many will not admit that they could possibly have it also and they certainly would not necessarily tell a friend or family member.
Recently in the news a few famous people have taken their lives.
In particular a beautiful model.
The newspaper reaction by and large was to ask why a beautiful person would want to take their life as if to suggest that if you are fat and deemed ugly it is more acceptable.
This immature approach is connected to the thought process that depression is a choice rather than a state that changes the familiar person to one that is unfamiliar to themselves and to others.
It is important that we understand that depression is not about how much money you have or how beautiful you are.
It is an illness of the mind that can be exacerbated by the above mentioned things and other things but is often not the cause.
It is important that you take away this underlying message about depression so that you understand that if someone is behaving outside of their norm, avoiding people, dong crazy inexplicable things and then swinging into a low mood (symptoms of bi-polar depression), that you are ware that they may need help rather than ignorance or judgement.
