How to Remove Sand From a Water Tank

    • 1). Set the gas valve on boiler to "Pilot." This will ensure safety so that the water burners do not initiate while the water is being drained and flushed. Most gas valves must be depressed and turned at the same time in order to reach the Pilot setting. Remember this setting as switching to its original position is important after the sand is removed.

    • 2). Attach the hose. A typical garden hose will suffice and will connect to the ringed drain at the bottom of the boiler tank. By turning the hose's ringed end counterclockwise it should lock onto the tank. Ensure the hose is firmly and securely attached. Also make sure that no one is near the point of attachment as hot water could spray out. Consider using lubricant if the hose and tank will not connect easily.

    • 3). Adjust water flow. Close the shut-off valve normally located at the top of the boiler tank. This will stop the flow of water, specifically cold water into the boiler tank. This handle can be hard to turn so a plumber's wrench may be necessary. Open up a nearby faucet, specifically the hot water and allow it to run. This prevents a vacuum buildup in the boiler as it is being drained for sand.

    • 4). Drain the water and sand in the tank. Opening the valve at the bottom of the boiler will begin the flow of water and sand from the tank to the bucket. Start slow to make sure the hose is properly connected and no scalding water will spray out. The water will collect in the bucket and sand and other minerals will collect as well. When the bucket is full, close the drain and dump the water. Repeat as necessary until the water flows clear.

    • 5). Return your boiler to normal function. Close the drain at the bottom of the boiler. Remove the hose carefully and close the pressure relief valve at the boiler's top. Set the cold inlet valve back to the "On" position. Turn a nearby water faucet to hot water and let it run until the water is smooth. Set the heater back on.
