Security Measures in the Airports Irritate Passengers, Not Making the Flight More Secure

Control on check-points just irritates passengers, not making the flight more secure; -- this is the conclusion of American scientists.
A group of specialists from Harvard didn't find any factors confirming that the long procedure of luggage examination with the help of different rays prevents skyjacking or terrorist attacks.
The procedures of taking off the passengers' footwear and confiscation of forbidden items also do not really affect the accident statistics.
US Transportation Security Administration, defending the measures it applies, has reported that this year they have confiscated about 13 million of forbidden items.
However, most of them are cigarette lighters.
Besides that, the researchers showed interest in observance of physical standards during passengers' inspection.
Thus, for example, often x-ray examination is dangerous for the people with some kinds of diseases.
5.
6 billion dollars are spent every year for the airports' security.
The researchers assure that with such an amount some measures are not necessary.
For example, should the passengers take off their shoes: is there anything that one can hide in his or her shoes and not in the underwear? It will be remembered that in November US Government Accountability Office (GAO), the main regulatory body of US Congress, has laid open to the public a report in which they pointed at the violation of passenger and luggage screening by the personnel of Transportation Security Administration, which allowed carrying explosives aboard.
The screening procedure was set up after British government has uncovered a terrorist plot; the terrorists intended to carry explosives aboard in hand-luggage in order to blow up the planes over Atlantic, in the middle of the flight to USA.
The GAO personnel have bought all the necessary components for making two hand-made bombs in an ordinary store, for less than 150 dollars and have hidden them in the luggage, including also the hand-luggage.
"Our examination has shown that terrorists, using available information, can create a threat to the health and security of the passengers aboard, carrying the components for making an explosive through the check points," is said in GAO report.
On March, 23 on one of the check-points, one of the airport's security officers has withdrawn a bottle of medicated shampoo without label from the GAO representative, but couldn't find the liquid explosive, was said in the report.
In June, in another airport the check-point employee didn't find the explosive even during the personal search.
According to the Government Accountability Office, the activity of Transportation Security Administration could be made more effective by undertaking "aggressive, apparent, unpredictable and deterrent measures" and also by increasing the number of screenings.
According to the department, it is necessary, besides that, to improve the technologies, which allow providing flight security.
