How to Sew Hair Into Braids
- 1). Wash, condition and blow-dry natural hair.
- 2). Braid natural hair into small cornrows, either vertically or in a spiral going from the edges of the hair to the middle. Leave about an inch of hair around the whole hair line out of the braids so that you will be able maintain a natural-looking hair line while wearing a variety of styles. Secure this hair with clips or ponytail holders to keep it out of the way while you are braiding.
- 3). Thread the hair weaving needle just as you would thread a regular sewing needle. Cut the thread and tie a knot at the end of it. For shoulder-length hair use a foot of thread per braid. Use more for longer hair.
- 4). Sew loose braid ends onto the cornrows. Fold the dangling portion of the braid back onto the part of the braid that is attached to the scalp, and sew it in place using the needle and thread.
- 5). Sew the first extension onto the braids horizontally. Starting at the very bottom of the braids, hold the extension against the braid and put the threaded needle through both. Pull the needle tightly from under the braid, but not so tight as to cause discomfort. Bring the needle back around in front of the extension and continue sewing until you reach the end of the braids. Tie a knot in the thread and cut the extension and the thread. Repeat this process, working your way up until you reach the top of the braids.
- 6). Cut extensions to desired length using scissors.
- 7). Style hair.
