How to Learn Basic Dance

    • 1). Pay for private dance lessons if your pocketbook allows. These types of dance lessons give you one-on-one instructions and plenty of practice. Here, you will get a private instructor and ample time to learn all of the basic dance moves. See the links in the Resources section to help you find a dance instructor or school in your area. The price for this will vary depending on where you live, but usually between $70 and $85 per lesson is a realistic price.

    • 2). Consider group lessons. These kinds of lessons are cheaper than private and there are generally groups of dancers participating. Some are beginners and want to learn the basic moves, while others may be more advanced. These groups meet regularly and have instructors there to guide you. This is a good way to meet people also. Look for groups at churches, the YMCA or even various singles groups depending on your interests.

    • 3). Purchase some video dance instruction tapes and practice in the privacy of your own home. While this option is not very formal, it will allow you as much time as you need to get the basic moves down pat. This is also ideal if you are shy about dancing in front of other people. Two good suggestions are Bob Rizzo's "Contemporary Turns and Jumps with Albert Cattafi" DVD or "Broadway Dance Center: Be the Music in Hip-Hop" with Jared Grimes.

    • 4). Use an online virtual dance instructor. A variety of dance lessons are offered online so you will be able to interact with an instructor at your own pace, in the privacy of your own home. There is generally a fee for these services, but it is not as costly as private or group lessons would be. Some lessons are also free. Two good places to start looking are at SimoneMaurice.com or Hip-hop-dance.net.

    • 5). Buy a book that teaches you how to dance. This might be the most difficult way to learn, but it is one of the most affordable methods. You could also get a book on basic dance instructions from your local library that would offer the same information. These books provide a step-by-step plan for learning the most basic dance moves. Check out "Best Dance Moves in the World . . . Ever!" by Matt Pagett or "Social Dance: Steps to Success, 2nd Edition" by Judy Wright.
