How to Attach a Flagpole to Column

    • 1). Measure the diameter of your column, and determine what material it is made of, such as wood, vinyl or metal. Metal will require specialized tools for drilling; visit your local hardware store to buy drill bits designed to cut through metal.

    • 2). Measure the diameter of your flagpole, and buy a flagpole holder that will fit snugly over your flagpole and comes with a mounting bracket to attach to your column. Ask a hardware store associate to provide you with recommendations for the perfect sized holder and bracket; the package will list a manufacturers' sizing chart so you can select the appropriate size for you column and flagpole.

    • 3). Examine the contents of your flagpole bracket kit to determine whether you have all the pieces and the mounting hardware, including screws to attach the bracket to your column, and nuts and bolts for the tightening mechanism to secure the flagpole sleeve tightly over your flagpole.

    • 4). Hold the bracket up against the column, and mark with a pencil and bar level to determine the perfect spot to secure your flagpole holder. Use a pencil to mark the placement of the screw holes in the bracket.

    • 5). Drill pilot holes for the screws at the pencil marks.

    • 6). Screw the bracket to the column using a power drill and screws or nuts and bolts as supplied in your bracket kit.

    • 7). Insert your flagpole into the bracket holder. Tighten using a wrench and the nuts and bolts that came with the bracket kit.
