    Side Effects

    • According to Drugs.com and MedlinePlus.com, possible side effects may include constipation, diarrhea, heart palpitation, increased blood pressure, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, hives, impotence, stomach or intestinal complications, intense depression or excitement, tremors, unpleasant taste in the mouth, restlessness, headache and overstimulation.

    Overdose

    • According to Drugs.com, an Ionamin overdose can cause skin disorders, abdominal cramping, aggression, confusion, hallucination, distorted reflexes, vomiting, rapid breathing, high or low blood pressure, nausea, diarrhea or feelings of panic.

    Drug Interactions

    • Taking Ionamin with fenfluramine can lead to very dangerous side effects, such as valvular heart disease. Drinking alcohol while on Ionamin is not recommended.

    Risk of Death

    • Ionamin can trigger a potentially deadly condition known as primary pulmonary hypertension. An overdose of Ionamin can also be fatal.

    Prohibitions

    • A patient suffering from hardened arteries, heart or blood vessel disease, glaucoma, high blood pressure or a hyperactive thyroid gland should not take Ionamin.

    Precautions

    • Patients should notify their doctors of any allergic reaction to Ionamin or other pharmaceuticals that stimulate the nervous system. Consultation is also necessary if the patient has developed a psychological reliance on Ionamin.
