Antonio Allen moving back to safety for New York Jets

FLORHAM PARK- Antonio Allen's time as a New York Jets cornerback is officially up.

Thursday afternoon, defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman confirmed that Allen will be moving back to safety full time. Throughout this season, Allen has been switching between safety and cornerback with little success.

"Well, he has tried to do everything that we have asked him to do," Thurman said.

"It was a tough move in the first once, one that we were looking at to try and see if he could do it. We have moved him back to safety and we'll see how he does."

With the Jets cornerback position ravaged by injuries, the team had moved Allen from safety to cornerback to provide insurance. Allen ended up starting at the position opposite Dee Milliner, then Darrin Walls when Milliner dealt with injuries, but struggled immensely. According to ProFootballFocus.com, Allen has let up a league-leading eight touchdown passes this year.

Quarterbacks have thrown at Allen 53 times in 2014, completing 36 (67.9 percent) for 487 yards. An opponent's passer rating when testing Allen is an astounding 136.6. In the last three games, Allen has let up a rating of 143.8, 158.3 and 156.3 when being targeted.

"That's how the game goes," Allen told Newsday's Kimberley Martin. "People are forced to be in positions they're not used to. You could complain about it or you could just be quiet and go to work as usual.

And that's what I came and did.

"Like I said, I did my best. I probably gave up a touchdown every game, but hey, that was a sacrifice I was willing to give up. That's what it is."

Allen's struggles as a cornerback reached its lowest point last week versus the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Alex Smith went at Allen time and time again, no matter where the 26 year old lined up. Allen gave up three completions on four targets for 54 yards and a touchdown. Jets coach Rex Ryan benched Allen at halftime.

"I wanted to stop somebody," Ryan said after the game.

With Allen moving back to safety full time, it may give the former seventh-round pick a chance to get back to the level of play he performed at a year ago.

Last year, Allen showed promise. Learning from former All-Pro and Ex-Jet Ed Reed, Allen gave up a completion percentage of just 55.3 and a quarterback rating of 71.8 in 14 games played defensively. He allowed just one touchdown and deflected five passes.

"It'll definitely be comfortable taking some of the load off me,'' Allen told Martin. "But I did whatever I could do at corner and I did it to the best of my ability. And I'm going to do the same at safety when I move back.''
